Ah, those amazing fanboys and their wars

The eternal question ‘Who would be faster in a foot race – Superman or The Flash?’ causes an upheaval on DC Comics’ blog and cause it to shut down. Amazing.

Fanboy war prompts closing of DC Comics’ blog comments

Comic book nerds giving other comic book nerds a bad name…
Superman and The Flash race for the prize

It’s no mystery that nerds, geeks, dweebs, or what have you, have extremely strong opinions about their beloved source material of choice, whether it be anything from comic books and film to architecture and classical music. That’s what makes covering geek-related news here at Shadowlocked so gloriously unpredictable. There’s no telling what powder keg is around the corner, ready to erupt at the slightest prodding.

And so The Source, DC Comics’ well-traveled Internet blog, recently released a brief preview of Superman #709, written by Chris Roberson and inked by Eddy Barrows. Inside, there is no alien armada poised to invade Earth, no intense internal struggles within Kal-El’s psyche, no global disasters, no supervillains. There is a friendly race; a race which purports to solve the eternal question: who would be faster on foot – Superman or The Flash?

Suddenly, as if horses drawn to the Kentucky Derby’s starting gate via the bugler’s rendition of First Call, a flood of pumped up fanboys descended upon the comments section, choosing sides with all the bloodthirsty enthusiasm of Wolverine in a Sentinel factory (Marvel reference, I know). Later that day, The Source shut down all comments on its blog after a note from a moderator. Here is the text of the note, in part —

“Due to the inappropriate comments on this post, we will no longer be allowing comments on The Source until further notice. My sincere apologies to those who came to this blog to actually discuss DC Comics and their books, but this back-and-forth has gotten out of control on this blog. Posts have been – and will continue to be – deleted on both sides of this conflict. Your post may not have included any offensive words, but by continuing this dialogue, you are only escalating the problem… We are working to make this site more hospitable to those who choose to comment properly and not take part in these offensive and inappropriate disputes.”

So to sum up, important ‘conflicts’ of note include Cannae, the 100 Years’ War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam…and the Great Superman vs. Flash Throwdown. Unfortunately, whatever offensive comments that existed to cause the site-wide shutdown have been deleted, but those familiar with the world of comics and its associated geek community can only imagine the furor that was involved in this bloodbath. The spluttering rage against ‘Stuperman’ and ‘The Trash’ must have been nigh incomprehensible. 3/16/2011 – never forget.

Hanging the Moose’s Head – 00:00-01:00

I am having this “Trying to Hang the Moose’s Head” moment occur to me so much in past few months that it had become like a running gag.
Even my wife knows what a Moose’s Head Moment is by now.

(The rest of this clip (00:57-03:55) is just a funny bit, not relating to my own life…)
